The Ammies Rules

The African Music Awards exists to recognise accomplishment in African recording industry by celebrating those groups and individuals who have excelled in the past year.

The sequence of the awards process

The First annual Ammies opens for entry on 30th October 2008 an official announcement is made prior to the opening date through direct communication to Recording industry of African Music as well as public announcements through the media and website publishing. The closing date for entry is on 28th February 2009.

Entries are submitted by record companies, in accordance with the published Ammies Rules

Entries received are then screened for compliance with the aforementioned rules and placement in the correct category. The purpose of this process, known as vetting, is to ensure that each entry is eligible and not at risk of disqualification, and is performed by the Ammies Steering Committee. No artistic or technical judgments are made about entries at this stage.

Entries into incorrect categories are recommended for placement in the appropriate categories by the Steering Committee, in consultation with the entrants. Entries that do not comply with the rules are disqualified.

Generally speaking, there is a different panel for each category, but in practice, a judge may serve on more than one panel.

All categories in the awards, with the exception of the public vote, Lifetime Achievement and Best Selling Album categories are adjudicated by a panel of the judges. They are selected for their integrity and expertise in their respective fields. Entries are forwarded to the judges who adjudicate according to strict guidelines, applying the judging criteria for each category, their expert knowledge of artists, music, the market and more. In the interest of uniformity, judges are required to return results on prescribed forms. Results are then collated into auditable sets. An independent firm of auditors calculates the results on which the list of nominees is based and certifies that such results have been arrived at in accordance with all relevant rules.

Nominees are then announced at the Nominees Launch.

Finally, the winners are announced at the awards Ceremony

The awards Ceremony will take place in 11th April 2009

How do I enter?

Entry forms must be completed and submitted online at www.ammies.com and must be accompanied by: Entries in genre based categories must be comprised of the predominance of tracks of the genre pertinent to the category entered into. Entrants in categories that receive less than three entries may not be eligible for an award but an award but may receive a certificate.

Prizes

Cash prizes and statuettes are awarded to the winning artists, producers, directors or engineers, as the case may be

Artists, producer, directors or engineers who are nominated in any category are expected to attend the awards ceremony. Those who fail to attend the awards ceremony will not be eligible to receive the cash element of their award, nor will they receive the statuette.

Exceptions to this rule will be considered provided that application is made by the nominee giving written notice of their inability to attend, with an accompanying motivation to be received by Ammies within fourteen days of the nominees being announced. Should the application be successful then the nominee may be required to record an audio-visual interview for each category entered for broadcast purposes.

Broadcast and exploitation rights

In order to produce the awards event, Ammies will require the following from each artist, producer, director and engineer who is nominated as a finalist in any category. The right to use each nominee’s photograph, name, likenesses, image, biography, interviews and recorded performance at each event of the awards, for the marketing, advertising, filming, broadcast and commercial exploitation of the awards. The right to use the sound recordings or part thereof embodied in the album entered in the awards for the purposes of the marketing, advertising, filming, broadcast and commercial exploitation of the awards

It is therefore a condition of entry that all artists, producers, directors and engineers agree to timeously sign Ammies ‘ standard contributors release form granting to Ammies the rights set out above and rights ancillary thereto. The contributors release form will be available to any entrant.
